Cat Tams is an award-winning Painter and Printmaker who
graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2023 with a First-Class degree in Fine
Art. She studied Drawing and Painting at Leith School of Art and completed a
Studio Assistant Apprenticeship at Edinburgh Printmakers. Her work is a
response to the visible world around her through observational drawing, with a
particular interest in exploring a sense of place - often at the meeting point
between humankind and the natural world.
Cat has a background in geography, and
has lived and worked in different parts of the world, and her art work draws from
memory of place and landscape. She has recently completed a Residency with The
Royal Drawing School at Dumfries House, where she worked directly from the
surrounding Woodlands and Gardens. The work explores the position of trees as
witness to a different scale of space and time to our own, and their
fundamental connection to humankind. Her work was recently selected for the Scottish Landscape Awards Exhibition 2025.
“Painting is very much back on the agenda this year, as it is at all the Scottish degree shows. Cat Tams’ still lifes are a highlight. She is interested in what paint can do, exploring light and colour through objects”

“Cat Tams is a sensitive and vigilant observer of her environment and is gifted in her ability to apply painterly techniques - the layering of pastels and oil paint with sophisticated motion creates a lush quality. With particular attention to light, colour and form she creates an interplay between volume and surface. Capturing the influence of her environment, Cat translates it into figurative works with intellectual response”
